While clearing out some old promos, I found Mardo’s The New Gun and Lynam’s Tragic City Symphony. I expect them to be bland indie-rock bands, so it was refreshing to hear hard rock blaring from my stereo. Neither album is good enough to review individually, but I found them both entertaining.

Mardo’s The New Gun has guitar heavy thrashers (“Lolita Live & Learn”), tamer dance-rock (“Killer on the Dancefloor”), the requisite lighters-swaying-in-the-dark monster ballads (“The Healing”, “Hide Your Mirrors”), and the unintentionally comical unplugged “Just Remember”, but there’s also a twisted electro soul-rock cover of “Papa Was A Rolling Stone”.

Lynam’s Tragic City Symphony is probably the better of the two albums. “Is This A Heartbreak Or A Loaded Gun” could easily capitalize on the post-”Paralyzed” catchy rock-pop trend. The unfortunate guest appearance by Hinder on “Enemy” is counterbalanced by the presence of Cinderella’s Tom Keifer and lots of cowbell! “Lindsay Says” is the radio friendly rock ballad and “If You Leave” is the more artistic string accented monster ballad, but there’s also plenty of rumbling guitar in “Can’t Do Anything” and “Make It Alright”.

Each album has its share of painfully cheesy numbers, so neither is to be taken seriously nor do I highly recommend either. But they are fun ear candy for those of us who really miss the hair band era.

I was not granted permission to share an mp3 from either band, but you can hear samples at the links below.
