The Gaslight Anthem: Handwritten

Many bands have tried and failed to capture The Boss’ throne, but The Gaslight Anthem have successfully proven themselves to be the true heirs of Bruce Springsteen. Their new album, Handwritten, is a bit more polished and often has a faster tempo than their brilliant previous release, American Slang (one of my top 10 of 2010). But both albums are as equally catchy as they are authentic – all rock guitars, blistering harmonica and gritty vocals. The standout tracks are “Handwritten,” “Too Much Blood,” “Howl,” “Biloxi Parish,” and the suddenly soft finale “National Anthem.” I wore out and scratched my copy of American Slang on roadtrips, I suspect Handwritten will suffer a similar fate.
