I’ve adored Tom Petty’s music my entire life, so his death is as significant to me as Bowie and Prince. Here in WV, the holy American music trinity is Bruce Springsteen, John (Cougar) Mellancamp, and Tom Petty.
Petty in particular seemed to be everywhere in the 80s and 90s: duets with Stevie Nicks; his Travelin’ Wilburys supergroup with Bob Dylan, The Beatles’ George Harrison, ELO’s Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison; “American Girl” in Silence of the Lambs; his own trippy videos featuring Alice in Wonderland and Johnny Depp on MTV; a plethora of movie soundtracks, and seemingly every single song he released on the radio.
While most of his huge catalogue of singles and albums were big hits, my personal favorite album was the less popular but beautiful Wildflowers-one of the few albums I bought on cassette tape, CD, then mp3.
Several songs from Wildflowers are in my Best of Tom Petty Spotify playlist, which was originally made for my own enjoyment. I hope you enjoy it, too…
