I debated including the Muruch-curated albums, but they are truly the two albums I have listened to most frequently and loved most intensely this year. Besides, it’s the artists and their music that make them so undeniably spectacular. I was just the DJ. That being said, every time I’ve been asked during the year what I think my #1 album of 2015 would be, my immediate answer has been: “Brandi Carlile’s The Firewatcher’s Daughter.” I love it more with each listen and it has the timelessness of the greatest classic albums.

Dengue Fever: New Album & Video!

The weirdness and brilliance that is Dengue Fever never ceases to delight me. The Cambodian band just released The Deepest Lake, the latest in their long line of amazingly unique albums, and here’s the first video…

Dengue Fever: Cannibal Courtship

Dengue Fever’s fourth studio album, Cannibal Courtship was just released on April 19th. As I said when I first posted the “Cement Slippers” mp3 back in February: The followup to 2008’s spectacular Venus on Earth again finds the Cambodian psych-rock band singing in English and Khmer. The album also features backing harmonies by Eleni Mandell‘s trio The Living Sisters.

While Venus on Earth had a funkier, multi-cultural take on Khmer rock, the new songs were painted with a more subtle, melodic brush. Yet the new album still has plenty of exotic quirks and psychedelic swirls.

Chhom Nimol’s eerily sultry siren call of “be my sacrificial lamb” in “Cannibal Courtship” is a prime example of why Dengue Fever can’t possibly be compared to anyone else.

Dengue Fever on HBO’s True Blood

The title track from Dengue Fever’s sophomore CD Escape From Dragon House was featured in last night’s episode of True Blood on HBO. Apparently the Cambodian band’s song played when Sookie and Bill were driving. You can watch the scene here. I’m a poor girl without HBO, so I’ve only seen previews of the vampire show. But I do love Dengue Fever’s latest release Venus On Earth.
