Alice Smith: For Lovers, Dreamers & Me

Singer-songwriter Alice Smith makes music that encompasses the funk flavoured soul of Leela James, the retro brass of Sharon Jones, the mellow r&b crooning of Corinne Bailey Rae, and the twangy psychedelica of Heartless Bastards. Alice’s robust voice would be enough to make any song worth listening to, even more so with such genre defying arrangements as can be found on For Lovers, Dreamers & Me.

St. Pepper pschedelic pop-rock mingles with soul and a bit o’ brass on the stellar opening track “Dream”. “Gary’s Song” is pure funk, reaching into the deepest depths of Alice’s voice.

“New Religion” at first seems to be a smoother pop melody, but hang on for the second half of the song when Alice blows the roof off her vocals. “Do I” prowls in with slinkier seduction.

“Fake Is The New Real” is another noteworthy track. The laidback aura of the socially conscious verses is spiced with an infectious and bluesy chorus.

Other tracks dip into a retro pop seasoned soul vibe that lags in the shadow of the more adventurous endeavors, yet don’t diminish the quality of this overall stunning piece of work. I would add Alice to my Top 10 list, but I can’t choose anyone to eliminate.
