Browsing Bandcamp, the Billie Holiday cover art to l’Orange’s Old Soul caught my attention. The music is not for everybody – some may find it repetitive – but I love it, film clips and all. You will hear Billie Holiday as never before, and another unique voice, that of Kelsey Lu. On “Lost Souls,” you’ll also hear Hassaan Mackey spitting those rhymes. I love the fact that “I’ll Be Seeing You” is sampled on the final track, “The Mourning.” The word transcendent is overused these days, but this one fits the definition: extending beyond the limits of ordinary experience. All Those Days to Feel Better is the latest release from busy Chicago-based singer-songwriter Derek Clegg. It’s a wonderfully twangy collection of songs. That album as well as several others by Clegg are available for free download at Bandcamp and the Free Music Archive.

One of my favorite songs this past year has been “Hold On” by Alabama Shakes – it is now available for download as a free, legal mp3 on Amazon as part of the MTV Artists Sampler. Kodaline, Stars, Everest, Samantha Crain, and Two Gallants are among the other artists featured.
Kate Tucker & the Sons of Sweden’s entire, fantastic self-titled debut (click for review) is available as a free, legal download on Noisetrade for a limited time. You can access the mp3s by entering your email address in the widget below and watch the video for my favorite track from the album, “Everything Went Down.” Kate has gathered a new band under the moniker Sons of Sweden and they are currently recording a follow up album.
K.S. Rhoads’ fantastic new album, From Outside the Wilderness, is available as a free, legal download on Noisetrade. My better half, Brendan, played it for me last night and I fell in love. It’s really nothing like Foxygen’s magnificent psychedelic We Are the 21st Century Ambassadors of Peace & Magic, yet From Outside the Wilderness hit me with the same kind of fresh, creative force. I especially love the whimsical instrumentation in the opening track, “The Wilderness.” You can access the mp3s by entering your email address below.
I love Alex Bailey’s jazzy/doo-wop/troubadourish blend of a song, “Autumn III – Tempo Pochettino.” The rest of the album, The Four Seasons, is a much more melancholy affair, in the vein of early Iron and Wine. I also like Bailey’s earlier album, Port Angeles. Very heartfelt and intimate, I think this music would appeal to fans of Elliott Smith or Nick Drake.
You know how sometimes you’re in the mood for French Malian music? Well, I’m here to help. Lessazo’s Soleil d’hiver (translation: Winter Sun) is a wondrous blend of instruments and voices, the work of 15 musicians from France and 15 from Mali. Download the double album at the Free Music Archive link below. You’re welcome.
