Thao Nguyen & The Get Down Stay Down: We Brave Bee Stings & All

I think Thao Nguyen & The Get Down Stay Down may be going simply by Thao, or at least they should be. Thao’s voice sounds a little like Cat Power, but her music is much more upbeat and varied. We Brave Bee Stings & All will be released in January, 2008 and is the Virginian singer-songwriter’s debut on the renowned Kill Rock Stars label.

Songs like “Beat (Health, Life, and Fire)”, “Bag Of Hammers”, and “Geography” layer soft mouse rock melodies with horns, banjo, piano, organ, hand claps, cymbals, tambourine, and a lot of other charming instrumental and manual noises.

Tracks like “Big Kid Table” are lower key but still have a slight swagger about them. The banjo takes center stage on “Swimming Pools”, despite its apparent “indie” blueprint. And “Fear And Convenience” is saved from mousey tedium by bluesy guitar and trombone.
