2012 was a very good year for music. Sometimes it’s difficult to come up with enough albums for my year end list, this year the problem was narrowing down my choices. Many bands have tried and failed to capture The Boss’ throne, but The Gaslight Anthem have successfully proven themselves to be the true heirs of Bruce Springsteen. Their new album, Handwritten, is a bit more polished and often has a faster tempo than their brilliant previous release, American Slang (one of my top 10 of 2010). But both albums are as equally catchy as they are authentic – all rock guitars, blistering harmonica and gritty vocals. The standout tracks are “Handwritten,” “Too Much Blood,” “Howl,” “Biloxi Parish,” and the suddenly soft finale “National Anthem.” I wore out and scratched my copy of American Slang on roadtrips, I suspect Handwritten will suffer a similar fate.

The Gaslight Anthem’s American Slang is sure to be on my year end list, but I just realized I neglected to review it over the summer. This is due to a combination of factors: 1) it’s so darn catchy I get too caught up in the joy of listening to formulate any proper review thoughts, and 2) there really isn’t enough variety in the individual songs to do my usual track-by-track review. But this is one of the most excellent, enjoyable rock albums I’ve heard in years.
Led by singer-guitarist Brian Fallon, the members of The Gaslight Anthem have only been together for three years yet they sound like a seasoned and well-honed rock band. The sound on American Slang is infectious but substantial rock – settled delciously somewhere between arena and roots.
