Lex Land: Free Album Download!

I love Lex Land’s Our Favorites collection, which is currently available as a free, legal, full album download on Noisetrade. Our Favorites features ten tracks culled from the former The Voice contest’s Orange Days on Lemon Street and Were My Sweetheart To Go albums. Lex’s voice is smokey and strong, her music a murky, bluesy brand of piano pop. Her sound often reminds me of Rachael Yamagata. I especially like the songs “Could’ve Had Me,” “As Much as You Lead,” “What Happens Now” and “Was It Really All That Bad?” You can downloads mp3s of the entire album by entering your email address below. And you can listen to all of the tracks before you download on Noisetrade.

The Voice: The Swon Brothers Cover Wagon Wheel

I wouldn’t have posted about The Swon Brothers’ cover of “Wagon Wheel” on last night’s episode of The Voice since I wasn’t particularly impressed by it, but for the fact that the performers and the judges incorrectly credited the song to Darius Rucker. I’m probably one of a thousand Old Crow Medicine Show fans who were shouting at the television screen as a result. Darius Rucker’s cover of “Wagon Wheel” has brought the song and Old Crow Medicine Show some welcome and much deserved attention, but if you have never heard the original (which is so superior to these covers it’s laughable), you are really missing out. Check out the original by Old Crow Medicine Show, and the inferior covers, below. Then check out all the Muruch reviews of Old Crow Medicine Show and you’ll understand why I think the Swon Brothers are mediocre.

The Voice: Sarah Simmons Covers Brandi Carlile

We in the Muruch household were very excited to hear Sarah Simmon cover Brandi Carlile‘s “The Story” on NBC’s The Voice last night. It’s our favorite Brandi Carlile song and really should be the next “Hallelujah” cool song everyone loves to cover (hear that, Allison Crowe?!). Sarah didn’t quite capture the chill-producing emotion of Carlile’s extraordinary original, but it’s a formidable song for any singer to tackle.

The Voice: Sasha Allen Covers Heart

Ever since Carrie Underwood broke out on season four of American Idol with her cover of Heart‘s “Alone,” the song has become a favorite on reality singing competitions. But it’s a great song by a great band, so that’s fine by me. Sasha Allen gave the femme monster ballad an emotive, acoustic soul makeover on The Voice last night. See her impressive cover and the unparalleled original by Heart below…
